Works by Liang Shuo and Yan Bing are currently presented in the opening group exhibition Self Topography at Guangdong Times Museum, curated by Wang Che.
The exhibition brings together works by sixteen artists engaging with eight types of landscapes—mountains, rivers, grasslands, the Gobi, plateaus, deserts, basins, and coastal regions. The actions, experiences, and expressions that unfold between the establishment of the self and the opening of the self constitute the overall character of the works in this exhibition. On one hand, the exhibition articulates artists’ differentiated and vivid experiences within various landscapes, fostering an awareness of second-hand knowledge and singular modes of judgment, while cultivating an openness toward dialogue with the natural, cultural, and historical dimensions of different terrains. On the other hand, it internalizes diverse visual experiences and bodily encounters into personal postures and modes of artistic expression.
Self Topography is also a process of moving toward diverse landscapes and affirming the self, as well as an action of departing from and returning to the art center. Through the observation and understanding of China’s varied terrains, different perspectives for interpreting the artists’ practices can be found. Each artist is shaped by the landscape of their own growth, and each work carries a geographical context of its making. From these terrains emerge all forms of life and human wisdom, offering multiple grounds for artistic interpretation, as well as manifestations of the sensibility, intuition, and spirituality that are essential to artistic creation.
