Hu Xiaoyuan will attend the Hammer Museum collection exhibition "Dirty Protest"

2019. 01. 24-2019. 03. 19

Hu Xiaoyuan is attending a group exhibition of more than 30 international artists in Hammer Museum "Dirty Protest: Selected Contemporary Collections of Hammer Museum". The exhibition, curated by Connie Butler, hammer's chief curator, is titled after a 2015 oil painting by Tala Madani. The exhibition focuses on Hammer Museum's new collection of contemporary art that has not been publicly exhibited in recent years. The works exhibited include oil painting, sculpture, painting, video installation, new media, works on paper, etc., demonstrating the museum's continuous efforts in expanding contemporary art media.

Hu Xiaoyuan's work wood/Trade No. 6 was collected by Hammer Museum in 2016. The wood/Trade series, which was started in 2011, is a combination of different kinds of wood made by the artist through careful selection of materials and careful stitching. The artist used the tough silk to wrap the wood, and then traced the pattern of the wood covered under the tough silk with pen and ink. When the white paint has dried and the wood lines are no longer visible, the artist stretches the painted silk back onto the wood surface, replacing the original image with a 'mock up', but making it more prominent. The appearance of "wood" series is a new starting point. Hu Xiaoyuan gradually puts her personal perspective and discussion into a broader context, and thinks and presents her thoughts in a more detached way.
